§5 Back and Lay Meaning in Cricket — Exchange Rules
GoExch9 is not a traditional fixed-rate platform but a peer-to-peer exchange. Back and lay sit at the core of it, and understanding the meaning of back and lay in cricket matters for every user, because every settlement rule rests on that model. A one line definition first, then an example:
FOR the outcome
BACK
Back means you are trading on an outcome happening. Back "India will win" and you win if India wins. This is the traditional style found on every platform.
AGAINST the outcome
LAY
Lay means you are trading on an outcome not happening. "India will not win", whether they lose or the match is drawn, puts you in the bookmaker's position. This is only possible on an exchange.
5.1 Back and Lay in One Line
Put simply: back means staking on something happening, and lay means staking on the same thing not happening. Those two directions are the whole basis of an exchange — if you are confident a team will win, you back it; if you think it will lose, you lay it. On an exchange every back is matched by another user's lay, which is why both sides are always available.
5.2 A Worked Back and Lay Example
An IPL match, Mumbai against Chennai, with Mumbai trading at a rate of 2.0:
Your Trade
Stake
Mumbai Wins
Mumbai Loses
Back Mumbai @ 2.0
₹1,000
+₹1,000 profit
−₹1,000
Lay Mumbai @ 2.0
₹1,000
−₹1,000 (liability)
+₹1,000 profit
Your back is matched against another user's lay — the platform never trades against you. That is precisely why exchange rates run 3 to 5 per cent better than a traditional platform. Take a free demo ID to practise the concept.
5.3 Commission
Commission of 2 to 5 per cent applies only to net winnings. Losing trades carry no commission. For example, a 3 per cent commission on ₹1,000 profit leaves ₹970 in your wallet.
5.4 General Trading Rules
Confirmed trades are final and cannot be cancelled or modified, though unmatched orders can be cancelled
Results settle on the official governing bodies such as BCCI, ICC and FIFA, typically within fifteen minutes of the event
Trades placed after the start are valid only in live markets; anything placed once the outcome is known is void
Trades struck on a technical error or an obviously wrong rate may be voided
Abandoned or postponed events settle under sport-specific rules
Live markets may suspend briefly at critical moments such as a wicket or a penalty
5.5 Quick Glossary
BackTrading on an outcome happening — the team wins, you win.
LayTrading on an outcome not happening — the team loses, you win.
Matched / UnmatchedMatched means paired with another user and live. Unmatched means still waiting in the order book, and cancellable.
LiabilityThe maximum possible loss on a lay — what you pay out if the outcome happens.
Odds / RateA rate of 2.0 returns ₹100 profit on a ₹100 stake. The bigger the rate, the bigger the return and the risk.
CommissionA 2 to 5 per cent platform fee on net winnings. Never charged on losses.
